FC Vrhnika Falls Just Short Against FC HIT in a Champions League Thriller
In one of the most dramatic nights of this year’s Futsal Champions League, FC Vrhnika came within inches of delivering a historic upset against the powerhouse FC HIT, ultimately falling short in a nail-biting finish that ended 2–1 in favor of the favorites.
Few gave the young and unexperienced Vrhnika squad a chance before kickoff. With an average age of just 22, facing one of Europe’s most experienced futsal clubs, the underdogs from Slovenia were not expected to hold their ground. Instead, they nearly rewrote the script of the tournament.
From the opening whistle, Vrhnika showed no signs of intimidation and shocked the Ukrainians with an opening goal on a fast break in the 13th minute. FC HIT managed to get an equalizer from corner in the 7th minute of second half and then successfully defended their own goal till end of the match. They have sealed their advancement into the next round with the goal on the empty net in final seconds of the match, as the home team was desperately trying to get back in front.
FC HIT’s players’ distasteful celebration, taunting the home supporters of FC Vrhnika, initially irritated the crowd, but in the end, they congratulated and applauded to the well-deserved winner of the tournament. After two dominant performances against FC FORCA and FC KYIV, in which they scored unbelievable 15 goals while conceding only 2, somewhat shockingly their biggest test came against young Slovenian team riding on the back of sold-out arena. In the end, however, they have without any doubt proven they were the best team at the tournament
On the other side, heart-broken FC Vrhnika players could not hide the tears, as they came so close to the historic upset. Their fearless performance earned standing applause from full house of fans and reminded the futsal world that passion and teamwork can challenge even the most established giants.
